Does HDMI support sound?

Hey guys, I have a PS3 and im considering getting an HDMI cable. I was wondering if I should also get a cable to upgrade the audio, or does HDMI also include audio?

Also, is HDMI the best choice for the PS3 both visually and audibly? I have the money to spare right now so I'm looking for the best. I saw this "Fiber Optical Toslink Digital Audio Optic Interface 6 Foot Cable" and wondered which was better. Thanks!

HDMI supports both sound and video. It offers the best Video quality and offers the SAME digital sound that the best optic cable would. So it only makes sense to go with an HDMI since you would get the best of both worlds in one cable.

Are there different kinds of optical audio cables?

I am looking to buy an optical/fibre optic audio cable for my Blu-Ray player so I can get true 5.1 surround sound but I noticed that there seem to be different types of optical cables. I've seen stuff about Toslink and Justlink and Halo connectors. Are there different types of optical cables? Do I need to buy a specific type of optical cable to correspond with my optical jacks on my receiver and player? What is the difference between these different names of parts of optical cables, if there is one? Thanks for your help!

Most Digital Fiber-optic cables, like the ones you find in Wal-Mart, support all Home Theater recievers and Blu-ray players.
I myself am using a Philips Digital fiber-optic cable for my PS3, and the sound quality is great.

Using the Best - HDMI and Toslink Cables

There is a ton of high definition capable components in the electronic entertainment world now and the people who buy these need to have the best support for them. These consumers sometimes don't think about the AV cables between these components, but if you don't use the best connectors it doesn't matter how high tech your toys are. As it grows there are now newer releases of this cable which can handle 40p, 1600p and 2160p capable resolutions. Another special feature is the HDMI is backward compatible with standard Digital Video Interface, DVI, which are present on most modern video cameras and computer monitors.

For the audiophile, there is the Toslink cable or Optical cable, which is a high quality digital optical connection for audio devices. Digital Optical inputs can be found on many recent audio devices such as MiniDisc recorders, DAT recorders, and high-end disc players. It is also increasingly being included on newer computers such as Apple's Unibody Macbook line of laptops.

The way the signal moves through the system, digital signal in an uncompressed state, is similar for the Toslink as the HDMI cables. This results in pure high quality audio output, great for sound editing and playback because there's a full sound spectrum with no loss due to compression. Both the HDMI and Toslink are the best and should be used if someone wants to see and hear the capability of their components.

HDMI is the best choice for PS3 because it supports 1080p video and HD audio. You won't need any other cable to run your PS3 to the TV. Besides, your TV most likely doesn't have optical (Fiber Optic as you called it) input... only an optical output (sends sound from the tv to a surround sound, but doesn't receive sound in from other devices).

TOSLINK â Basic Things You Need To Know

The significant feature of these fiber optic cables is that they could convert signals of audio into light impulses as opposite to electric signals. 8 Basic Facts About Hdmi

It can be pretty difficult to keep up with all the new acronyms coming out these days! Upgrading your technology is one of the few times that you will be forced to learn all of the new ones, if only to make sure that you know what you are buying! HDMI is one that is definitely worth learning about though. The technology is the new gold standard in multimedia connections, and is here to stay. Today we are looking at what that little length of copper and plastic known as a HDMI cable opens your home theater system up to, with a few basic facts about HDMI.

1. What is HDMI?

HDMI utilizes digital technology, rather than analog video signals, to get a picture from its source, to your television … and from there to your eyes! The letters stand for High Definition Multimedia Interface.

2. The advantages of HDMI lots

There are tons of advantages to HDMI technology – one of the reasons that the HDMI cable you buy today will be a solid decades-long investment. The advantages include:

* Gives better picture and sound quality by eliminating the need to convert a signal from digital, to analog (in the S-Video or other cable), back to digital
* Compresses up to 8 channels of audio into a single cable.
* No data is ‘thrown away’ in order to fit an audio or visual signal into the cable – this occurs with Toslink optical and digital coax connectors.
* Upgrades to the technology don’t mean you have to replace your cables (more on that later)

3. HDMI and DVI are not the same

HDMI is capable of carrying both audio and video signals – DVI is capable of carrying video signals only. However, both DVI and HDMI cables are all-digital interfaces and have the same high definition capacity.

4. HDMI and DVI are compatible with a converter

HDMI technology is actually based on the DVI concept, and HDMI cables are fully backwards compatible with DVI. You just need a converter to make the plugs fit together. There are a couple of HDMI-specific features that you lose with this method – automatic screen size conversion and universal remote control applicability are two.

5. HDMI has different technology versions

HDMI has undergone several upgrades since 2002, when it was released. Upgrades have included adding Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio support and DVD-audio support, adding Super Audio CD support, etc – basically doing away with ever more cables.

6. Upgrades do not render HDMI cables obsolete

However, an important thing to note is that future upgrades will not render your HDMI cables obsolete.

7. Different cable lengths require different thicknesses

Just as with traditional speaker cables, the longer distance you intend to run your HDMI cable over, the thicker the internal wire gauge needs to be. Joining two thinner cables together with a connector doesn’t give optimal sound or video – and in some cases gives no sound or video!

8. HDMI and HDCP go hand in hand

HDMI cables will only connect your devices provided they are compliant with the High-def Digital Content Protection (HDCP) scheme. HDMI and HDCP go hand in hand – and non-HDCP compliant devices won’t be able to ‘talk’ through HDMI cables.
