Different Types Of Hdtv Cables

HDTV cables are conduits of HDTV transmissions. There are two kinds of HDTV connections: analog or digital. Various HDTV cables are used for these connections. They should be of good quality and well installed to guarantee a fully reliable system.

Analog HDTV cables

Analog HDTV signals are either RGB (usually RGBHV) or component video (Y/Pb/Pr).

Component connections are made using RCA connectors. These connectors transfer SDTV NSTC signals from external devices such as DVD or VHS to HDTV displays. Component cables are usually color coded: green for Y, blue for Pb and red for Pr. Audio cables are also color-coded: red for Right audio and white for Left audio.

Seventy-five (75) ohm video coaxial cables are suitable for these applications. These HDTV cables end with RCA plugs, BNCs or VGA monitor plugs.

HDTV analog signals are ten times stronger than NTSC. HDTV signals scale up to 35 MHz while NTSC reaches only up to 3.5 MHz. It is important that HDTV cables which connect devices together maintain a consistent impedance of 75 ohms. HDTV cables which do not meet proper specifications will cause ghosting or "ringing" of projected images because portions of the signal issues back and forth within the cable instead of being smoothly delivered to the screen.

Before purchasing analog HDTV cables, make sure that the device has been sweep-tested at least up to 105 MHz. Also, check that the impedance tolerance is 75 ohms within +/- 1.5 ohms.

Digital HDTV cables

Digital HDTV cables exist in SDI or Serial Digital Interface. However, this very strong cable is still commercially unavailable. In the market are the DVI (Digital Visual Interface) and HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface ).

Bi-directional connection between computers and monitors is possible through dual-channel versions of DVI. These connections carry only video. Audio must be carried by other HDTV cables.

HDMI carries digital uncompressed audio between devices such as an STB and a display. Smaller connectors are used with HDMI. The HDMI HDTV cable allows for bi-directional interface also. HDMI uses a 19 pin connector for single link or a larger 29 pin connector for dual link.

Cables to interconnect DVI and HDMI devices are also available.

DVI and HDMI are characterized by very short cable lengths because they designed to house a copy-protection scheme. Digital HDTV cables use twisted-pair cable not coaxial cables which analog HDTV cables use. DVI and HDMI work without problems over short distances but some low-quality cables falter beyond ten feet.

Practically no digital HDTV cable works beyond fifty feet. Pre-formed DVI cables up to 10 ft. in length are available. Longer lengths require specialized materials and are expensive. Although digital interconnections produce highest video and audio quality, running over long distances is the limitation of digital HDTV cables.

Other cables

S-Video Cables. are used in some televisions to improve picture quality of NTSC signals. Audio must be interconnected separately using RCA cables. S-Video cables are available in any length.

F Cables are coaxial cables with F-connectors used to connect to antennas or satellite dishes to the TV cable system. Several possible cables are selected depending on the length needed. RG-59 is acceptable for short lengths but a low-loss cable is needed for roof-top antennas.

Mini DB 15 RGB Monitor Cables are used to connect PC to HDTV displays with analog RGB interfaces. These cables extend up to 5 meters. Special cables are needed beyond this length. Screw locks secure the connectors to warrant a firm connection.

Firewire/1394 is designed for digital video connections. Audio and video are carried together. The four pin version is the most common but six pin versions are also available for some devices. Prefabricated HDTV cables like these are up to 3 meters.

Dolby Digital audio in SPDIF format is frequently transmitted in optical form. Fiber link, an optical fiber cable which is also called "optical audio output cable", may be employed to send these transmissions to the decoder in the audio system. Excessive bending or twisting of these cables must be avoided as not to break the fiber inside.

There is a huge variety of audio cables on the market, varying in size, shape, cost and quality. The most popular audio cable on the market is the optical digital audio cable, also known as the Toslink cable.

The Toslink cable is a standardized optical fiber cable used for connecting input devices such as CD/DVD players to output devices like TVs or a home theater system. How do I connect an audio/video cable X3(red white yellow) to input X2(no red socket)?

the new converter for digital to analog box will output with (red white yellow), my old TV only has (white yellow) input. I've been using this TV with an antenna to get local channels only when satelitte goes down. I want to continue using this TV if possible.

that is a stereo AC hook up to a mono one. In most cases you need to just hook up the L channel (white) as most devices will compensate for the missing channel, you should never combine the two as this would be an impedance miss match.

If you provided details on exactly what you are hooking up it would go a long way in reducing confusion.

EDIT: with the additional information a summary answer can be given. You should only hook up the two cables you have. Your TV set will properly interpret the mono signal given to it via the one channel of audio. I would suggest that you check any settings in the tuner and set these to monaural.

Types of Audio Cable

The audio cables can make the hearing possible of a sound wave travelling through solid, liquid or gas. To make the sound audible, it should have a pressure of 20 micropascals or requires being at 1000 Hz. Below are the types of cables that are used to transmit audio signals:

• RCA Stereo Audio Cables – They are originally designed for amplifiers that are used to connect mono phonograph players. They are also used a video cables. Each of these cables requires a separate plug and the audio devices that need an adapter along with RCA cable to work. This is one of its disadvantages as compared to other types of cables.

• Digital Audio – S/PDIF Cables - S/PDIF is shorthand for Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format cable which is used to transmit stereo digital signals. They are also used in sound cards of computers, car audio systems, CD or DVD.

LCD Tv only has COAX audio output. Stereo only has Red and White cable Input. What can I do?

So I just bout this Element Tv. My old Tv had the standard Left and Right (Red and White) Audio cable input that allowed me to plug my iPod dock (Sharp) into the TV and have great sound. The iPod dock does not take COAX. I was wondering if there is a way that I can go from a COAX to a Red and White (I believe it's an RCA plug). Any suggestions?

I did some research on it, and there is no way to convert a digital coaxial signal to a Red and White RCA signal.

Introduction to Home Theatre Audio

Many filmmakers say that what's on the screen is only half the movie, the other half is to be found in the soundtrack, carefully crafted by talented composers and musicians to elicit emotions of excitement, fear, sadness and joy in the viewer. Once of the major benefits of watching moves on DVD or hi-def formats is the availability of faithful reproductions of the multi-channel sound that can, when fed through a reasonable home system, sound even better than in many modern movie-theatres.

When most consumers go down to the store and pick up a big new flat screen plasma or LCD TV, they may think that they are all set and ready to go. In fact, the sound provided by even an expensive top-of-the-range TV is incredibly limited, providing little or no low-frequency response, producing only a flat, distorted version of the movies music, and generating little or no directionality. If they are good at anything, it is producing clear, audible dialogue, but that's pretty much it.

Modern movie soundtracks contain so much more information; they contain multiple channels so the viewer perceives the sound to be coming from a particular direction, such as a plane flying overhead, or dialogue coming from left or the right. They also contain low-frequency information, to reproduce deep bone-shaking sounds such as explosions or rumbling engines. To be able to access and hear all this extra information you need a dedicated home theatre audio system.

The basic home theatre audio system consists of an amplifier and multi-channel speaker set. The job of the amplifier is to decode and then amplify the multiple audio tracks present on the disc. To do this, it needs to be connected to the DVD or Blu-Ray player by a data-cable. A fiber-optic digital audio cable (also known as a TOS-link cable) will be needed for DVD's, but to decode next-generation hi-def audio will require a HDMI cable connection. The HDMI cable also carries the video stream, so most amplifiers will have a HDMI out socket, allowing the video information to continue on to the TV or projector.

In terms of power, a quality separate amplifier be marked somewhere in the 80-100 watt range, which is plenty for watching a movie in the average family home. Beware amplifiers that are built into DVD players, or into a speaker set, they are usually underpowered and will perform poorly. The most demanding audio signals to reproduce are the low-frequency type; so many speaker-sets will have "active" sub-woofers, which have small dedicated amplifiers built in.

Speakers for home-cinema can be purchased in packages of matched sets, or individually, allowing you to mix fronts from one manufacturer with rears from another. In general, purchasing a set of matched speakers is the best option for beginners and will produce a very good sound. Unlike regular stereo speakers, home cinema speaker-sets are generally split into dedicated low and mid/high frequency speakers, with the sub-woofer speaker handling the low-frequency sounds by itself. This works because it is very difficult to detect the direction of low-frequency sounds, so it does not matter where in the room the sub-woofer is placed. By contrast the direction of mid and high frequency sounds is easier to detect, so speaker-placement is key, with left/ right speakers best positioned level with the screen and widely spaced apart, the central speaker positioned directly beneath the screen, and the rear speakers positioned diagonally facing the viewer from behind. This setup is for a 5.1 speaker set, which is all that is really required for proper directionality, although 6.1 and 7.1 sets are available.

I need an adapter for the green colored audio cable that is on speakers?

I have speakers that plug into the computer that have the green colored cable. I need to plug it into my vcr and it has a red, yellow and white adapter. What do I need to make the audio cable fit? Is there an adapter that will fit the audio on the VCR/DVD?

Go to RadioShack and tell them you need a "headphone to RCA adapter" - they will get you one. It's also called "3.5 milimeter to RCA."

the problem you are going to have is that most converters FROM RCA to 3.5mm, but you need one that goes from 3.5m TO RCA. That's way I said RadioShack - they will have one where I doubt Best Buy or something like that would.

Should Cars Have High End Audio Cables

For years it has been well understood in home audio that cables can have a tremendous impact on a sound system, both good and bad. Choose the right cables and you can expect a system to come to life. Choose poorly designed cables, and you may forever be wondering why you can’t get your system to come to life.

Car audio however, has been a different story. While many companies still offer coaxial interconnect cables, most have come to realize that the basic twisted pair design offers far better noise rejection in a vehicle. And then… Nothing. That’s it. Innovation seems to have hit a brick wall at the shielded twisted pair interconnect in car audio. This begs the question; Should Cars Have High End Audio Cables?

To begin with, let’s briefly go back to home audio. After many years of fighting an uphill battle, the idea that cables make a difference has become a mainstream ideology amongst audiophiles. But it isn’t just audiophiles who can hear the difference. In fact, in our own testing, the differences can be heard by just about anybody, even on very modest audio systems. It just takes a willingness to discard any preconceived notions and actually listen to some music.

So, if cables make a difference in home audio, is there a reason why it shouldn’t matter in car audio? The quick answer is no. The following outlines some of the reasons why cables matter just as much, if not more, in car audio.

Many people are under the impression that car audio uses shorter cables than home audio, and therefore does not need to bother with high fidelity cables. This is completely incorrect. While the typical interconnect length in a home audio system is about 1 meter, vehicles will frequently use 5 or 6 meter interconnects to put amplifiers in the trunk. In terms of speaker cables, car audio almost always uses cables longer than the 6-8 feet used in most home audio setups.

Vehicles represent a far more challenging environment for cables than home audio systems. Two typical sources of noise in cables are Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). In vehicles, the entire chassis is frequently used as the ground return path. This allows noise from car components such as the alternator to be inducted into the audio cables via EMI. In terms of RFI, unless proper shielding is used, the longer cables in cars will act as antennas and pull in more noise. A third source of noise in a vehicle is vibration. This is of course far worse in a vehicle than in a home system. Pear Cable is the first company to bring out a car audio cable that virtually eliminates the noise caused by cable vibration. - Is Quality Sound Just for Home Audio or does it have a Place in Car Audio Too?

Some people feel that a car audio sound system will never be as good as a home audio system, and therefore high fidelity cables are a waste of money in a car. This is a faulty conclusion. The experience of listening to music in your vehicle while driving down the highway is unique and cannot be replicated in the home audio environment. The bottom line here is that many people spend more time listening to their car audio system than their home system, and they want it to be the best that it can be. The characteristics of bad audio cables (listening fatigue, poor realism, overly bright treble, or general noise) will all still be audible in a car audio system. Just like home audio, the wrong cables in your vehicle will kill the listening experience.

At the end of the day, many people want quality sound in their vehicles. If you are installing an aftermarket system in your vehicle and you care about sound quality, you need to care about cables. If you are only interested in having the loudest car, without regards to accuracy, then high fidelity audio cables probably aren’t for you. Otherwise, it simply doesn’t make sense to shell out good money on amplifiers and speakers, only to hook it all up with mediocre wire. Car audio enthusiasts are every bit as serious as home audio enthusiasts, and now there is finally a cable company that is serious about serving their needs.
