Is there a way to make my computer speakers work via USB instead of the headphone jack?

My new laptop has the headphone jack in a very awkward place.

Is it possible for my external speakers to receive the signal through a USB port instead?

Absolutely as long as you have a USB speaker systems. I am using a USB speaker system myself. In windows you may have to go to the control panel and select sound and hardware and change your out put to external speakers. Also make sure the drivers for your speakers are properly loaded.
