PS3 Cables: HDMI and Digital Optical? What if I use both?

Can I get audio from a Digital Optical while also using HDMI?
The way my TV and Receiver are set up with everything else, I'm considering running an HDMI from the PS3 to the TV, and a Digital Optical for audio to the Receiver from the PS3. Will this work? I imagine the HDMI will be faster and I'll end up with an echo in the surround sound vs. the TV speakers (in which case I'll just turn the TV speakers off). Will I be able to do it this way, though? My Receiver doesn't have HDMI support so I'm hoping I can split the audio and video as described. Otherwise, I'll have to buy component cables instead for the video signal, but I'd prefer HDMI.

Yes you can, I have it hooked up that way and have had no probs, been playing mine since release!!! I run an Onkyo reciever and don't use the Tv speakers, why would I want to!!!!!!!!!! oh and on your PS3 make sure you change the settings to optical output!
